Biography
John G. Kent 93 of Temple died Monday December 14, 2009 at the residence of his daughter in Austin, Texas.
Services for Mr. Kent will be held at 2:30 PM Friday December 18, 2009 at the Scanio-Harper Funeral Home in Temple with Father Ranjan Cletus officiating. Burial will be at Hillcrest Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 1:30 until service time on Friday.
John was born to Charles and Sarah Kent in Minonk, Illinois March 19, 1916. He enlisted in the Army-Air Corp in 1936. During W.W. II Mr. Kent served with General Chernnault’s China Task Force where he participated in numerous air missions. Upon cessation of hostilities in 1945, he continued to serve the United States Air Force Strategic Air Command for 22 years retiring with the rank of Superior Master Sergeant in 1959.
Sergeant Kent’s awards and decorations include the Good Conduct Medal Clasp with five Loops, American Defense Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asian-Pacific Campaign Medal., W.W. II Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Air Force Longevity Service Award with four bronze oak leaf clusters.
John was offered and accepted a position with the Nike Zeus Missile program in Roswell New Mexico upon retirement. He continued to render distinguished and exemplary service to his country for another 25 years retiring from Fort Hood in 1974. He was a resident of Temple for 53 years and was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus #3444.
Mr. Kent is survived by a son Martin Kent of Temple two daughters Donna Kent VonLunen of Austin and Helen Kent of New York as well as four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Marie Kent.
His quick witted humor and wisdom will be missed. Thank you Dad for all your work and sacrifice on our behalf.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the V.F.W. #1820 in Temple.
