Biography

Ben K. Yoshinaga, age 87, of Temple died Wednesday, December 23, 2009 in Temple. A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, December 28, at St. Luke’s Catholic Church. Rosary will be recited at 4:00 PM on Sunday, December 27 at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home Chapel. Inurnment of remains will be in Los Angeles, California at a later date.

Mr. Yoshinaga was born on July 6, 1922 in Los Angeles. He started college at UCLA but along with other Japanese Americans was placed in an internment camp during WWII. He completed his B.S. in engineering at North Central College, Naperville, Illinois. Ben married Alice Nitta on January 11, 1947. He worked in furniture manufacturing in Los Angeles and St. Charles, Illinois before moving to Temple in 1979 to become vice president of manufacturing for American Desk and general manager of Taylor Manufacturing. He retired in 1992 at age 70.

He was a member of St. Luke’s Catholic Church and has been a member of the Knights of Columbus and past president of Temple Rotary Club. He was a charter member of Wildflower Country Club and has lived in Temple for the past 30 years.

Survivors include his wife, Alice, daughters, Niki Yoshinaga of Portland, Oregon, Christine Yoshinaga-Itano of Boulder, Colorado, one son, Jim Yoshinaga of Denver, Colorado and two grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the Glenda Tanner Vasicek Cancer Center at Scott & White Memorial Hospital, Scott & White Hospice or St. Luke’s Catholic Church.
