Biography

Thomas Jones "Mac" McEver (age 85) died Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010 in Temple, Tx. He was born June 30, 1924 on a farm near South Bosque, TX to Thomas Jones McEver Sr. and Maryh Edna Lawson McEver.

Mac graduated from McGregor High School and served in the 12th Air Force, 347th Bomb Group in World War II participating in campaigns in Rome, Arno, Po Valley, North Appennine and Southern France. He was a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans and Veteran of Foreign Wars.

Mac married Betty Lou Johnston on July 12, 1947, in Brownwood, Texas and they made Temple their home later that year. Mac worked for 40 years as a Fireman and Engineer for the Santa Fe Railroad. He served as Local Chairman of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen & Engineers, President of the Santa Fe Credit Union, member and officer the the National Association of Retired Veteran Railroad Employees, Board Member of Naler Cemetery Association, and active in Lakeview Baptist Church serving on various committees. In retirement he loved volunteering at the Railroad and Heritage Museum showing children how to ring the bell on the engine for Railroad Crossings.

He had a lifetime commitment to sports, particularly softball, playing for Bell County Insurance, the Cotton Ginners and various church teams until age 74. Mac was instrumental in starting Girls Softball League in Temple.

Mac is survived by his wife Betty of Temple; three daughters Roberta Amos and husband, Charles Amos of Temple; Patricia McEver of Temple; Bonnie Estes and husband Greg Estes of Henderson; 3 grandchildren Neely Jones of Temple, Thomas Estes of Henderson and Taylor Estes of Tyler and great grandsons William and Thomas Lee Estes.

Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Friday at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home with Rev. Sam Callaway officiating. Burial will be in Bellwood Memorial Park.
