Life Legacy


Mary Leshikar, 68, of Temple died Sunday September 18, 2011 in a Temple hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the Brethren Church in Taylor, Texas with Rev. Mark Labaj officiating. Burial will follow at the Taylor City Cemetery.

Mrs. Leshikar was born May 8, 1943 in Aberdeen, Washington to Edward Charles and Hazel Iola Cooper Pickett. She graduated in 1965 from the University of Washington with a bachelor degree. She married Howard Leshikar September 14, 1963 in Washington. She had taught English at Temple High School from 1985 to 2008. Mary received the following teaching honors, Teacher of the Year in 1978 presented by VFW Aux. Post 4009, “Court of Honor” for outstanding service in 1993 at Temple High School, the C.L. Neal Educator of the year in 1995 by the Kiwanis Club of Temple, and the Distinguished Educator in 2006 by the Temple Education Foundation. She enjoyed visiting with family and friends, traveling, enjoying the arts and theater, and working her flower garden. Her sons were the light of her life and her students were a prime interest in her life.

Survivors include her husband Howard Leshikar of Temple; two sons, Cody Leshikar and wife Rebecca of Temple and Ryan Leshikar of Temple; one sister, Linda Trice of West Richland, Washington; one brother, Louis Pickett of Aberdeen, Washington. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister Edna Worrell.

Visitation will be held 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Scanio-Harper Funeral home.

Friends can also view Mrs. Leshikar at the Providence Funeral Home in Taylor from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday.
